Once an impressive gatehouse, this Grade II listed folly castle stands proudly within its own grounds, lovingly restored with no expense spared. A vibrant history meant that this splendid building fell into many different hands - it now serves as a holiday venue, offering modern technology whilst exuding an atmosphere of great charm, which lives on long after departure. Original features such as beamed ceilings, original stone walls, and leaded windows are combined with modern appliances discreetly concealed, and the latest technology is also put to use. Rooms automatically light up on entry and air dehumidification filters optimise the climate. A majestic dining hall with vaulted ceiling and flickering wall candles provides the ideal setting for a medieval banquet (outside catering available). The drawing room, and the living room with its deep leather sofas are very inviting for a social group evening, while the study offers a quiet alternative with a crackling open fire. For those preferring more active pursuits, there is a games room with air hockey, table soccer, pool, darts and giant Jenga. All bedrooms boast four-poster beds, most with en-suite facilities. Reached by a spiral staircase, the Rapunzel Tower - adored by children and adults alike - is found in the west wing, whilst an open tread iron staircase in the central turret leads to the first floor bedrooms and tapestry-panelled hallways. Outside, cream teas can be enjoyed in the summerhouse, and log cutting in the wood shed. The orchard yields delicious fruit, and cuttings can be taken in the Victorian potting shed. Around Duck Lake makes for a pleasant stroll, and there is bird-watching and star gazing from the observatory. Walks lead from the castle to the woods and lakes, with cycling and riding locally. Ideally set along the A350, there are unspoilt villages nearby, and Stonehenge and the famous White Horse to visit. Bath, Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury and Stourhead Gardens within easy reach. Minutes away is Longleat with 'hands-on' safari and boat trips.
